Living, Loving, Learning & Leading
Just over a week ago I ambitiously tried to run 12 miles. As many of you know, I’m training for the half marathon and have taken my running up a gear in the last few weeks. Although I have managed this distance before (just about!) this time pain surged through my right knee shortly after the 10 mile mark and getting home was agony.
Apparently I have ‘IlioTibial Band Friction Syndrome’ which is so prevalent in runners that it is more commonly known as ‘Runner’s knee.’ It affects up to 10 percent of runners at some stage (how encouraging!) and is an overuse condition usually triggered by excessive or sudden alteration in training. (Needless to say Johnny hasn’t got this condition!)
I learned all this (and more) from my recent copy (March edition) of ‘Running Fitness’ - thanks chaps! It is one of the top three injuries runners can get, but you’ll have to read the article to find out the other two…
My story does have a happy ending; I strapped up my knee and managed a run on Wednesday, then I did 9 miles yesterday and all tibial joints felt fine, so I think I’m back in the race. Something else that was rather pleasing, ‘Running Fitness’ printed a letter I sent them, so I’m rejoicing in being recognised by the wider running community (I’m easily pleased)!
Johnny and Hannah reside in Essex with their gorgeous kids Noah and Esther. They love to connect with people and make an impact in their local community. Johnny is a church leader with a passion for communicating truth and encouraging people in life-long obedience to Jesus, whilst Hannah keeps the family together and is busy with women's ministry and writing projects. They love life, music, movies, coffee and books, preferably not all at the same time!

I guess Johnny’s more likely to have ‘page-turners wrist’ from excessive reading!
Good on you Hannah. I ought to aspire to something similar in the way of a half marathon, but at the moment, not feeling fat on my 30th is the only target. The annual soreness of starting winter cricket nets has been a shock this weekend as well.
On a slightly geeky note - what trainers do you wear? I’ve had nothing other than Asics for the last 10 years. They look awful but feel great and might help your knees. Sports Direct are knocking them out terribly cheaply at the moment.
