Just over a week ago I ambitiously tried to run 12 miles. As many of you know, I’m training for the half marathon and have taken my running up a gear in the last few weeks. Although I have managed this distance before (just about!) this time pain surged through my right knee shortly after the 10 mile mark and getting home was agony.

Apparently I have ‘IlioTibial Band Friction Syndrome’ which is so prevalent in runners that it is more commonly known as ‘Runner’s knee.’ It affects up to 10 percent of runners at some stage (how encouraging!) and is an overuse condition usually triggered by excessive or sudden alteration in training. (Needless to say Johnny hasn’t got this condition!)

I learned all this (and more) from my recent copy (March edition) of ‘Running Fitness’ - thanks chaps! It is one of the top three injuries runners can get, but you’ll have to read the article to find out the other two…

My story does have a happy ending;
I strapped up my knee and managed a run on Wednesday, then I did 9 miles yesterday and all tibial joints felt fine, so I think I’m back in the race. Something else that was rather pleasing, ‘Running Fitness’ printed a letter I sent them, so I’m rejoicing in being recognised by the wider running community (I’m easily pleased)!
